Alex Donaldson.

Hello! I’m Alex Donaldson. I’m a critic, journalist, web developer, and copywriter primarily focused on the world of video games and emergent technology.

I got a very early start in the world of online media, working to set up my first fansite aged just eleven. Many firsts came early - from first official work with a game publisher aged thirteen, to a first trade show aged fourteen, and a first foreign event trip at sixteen. My time at college and university was funded by freelance journalism and continuing efforts to build a games media business.

Able to ply that childhood obsession into a career that now spans over two decades, I have since worked at all levels across multiple disciplines. I’ve launched, acquired, sold, and ran independent website brands, toiled in editorial both on staff and freelance for major games media conglomerates, worked with publishers and developers as a consultant, and appeared as a video games expert ‘talking head’ freelancer for mainstream outlets such as the BBC and Sky.

I’m the co-founder and Publisher of RPG Site, the web’s most-trafficked genre-specific destination for fans of the sprawling role-playing game genre. RPG Site is directly descended from the fansites I set up in my teens, but it is now a go-to ‘by experts, for experts’ brand with a talented and knowledgeable editorial team serving millions of pageviews monthly.

I additionally hold a part-time Editor-at-Large role with Gamer Network, the British games media brand owned by Ziff Davis’ IGN Group. My writings can be found on websites like Eurogamer and VG247, alongside occasional video appearances on IGN itself.

Owing to my work on many independent websites over the years and continued ownership of RPG Site, I am also a founding member of ‘Games Media Indies’, an informal support group for owners, editors, and investors in truly independent video games media.

My most-acknowledged areas of video game expertise are role-playing games, fighting games, strategy games, classic and modern arcade gaming, PC hardware, the Japanese development community, and all things retro.

I'm mixed race, and grew up in the Solihull area of the West Midlands, near Birmingham. After some travelling abroad, I returned to Solihull to settle down. In my spare time my non-gaming obsessive pursuits include Watches, Whisky, Lego, League ten-pin bowling, collecting & maintaining original Arcade Hardware, supporting the NFL’s Rams, and playing Poker and Blackjack.
